Springs National Series - Round 3

Iguess the further we get into the National Series, the points begin to show how they work compared to last seasons system. Last year you could finish midfield in most of your feature races,

drop your worst nights result and still manage a top 3 result overall. This year has everyone on edge because the point’s difference between a podium finish and further down is enormous. On top of all of that you cannot drop your worst finish like last year.

So you have to be fast and consistent every night. Standing on the track for the warm up you look around and the quality of this field is unbelievable. I would bet that this has got to be the strongest bunch of Midgets ever assembled week in and week out at Western Springs. If you asked any of the drivers what their expectation was sitting on the grid prior to the Feature, they would all tell you that they want to win tonight, and every one of those drivers are more than capable of doing just that.

Brad had made it through his heats and finished well enough to have him start on the front row of the Feature along side Lance Beale. On the first start Brad got out early and went into 1st, On the first lap we had a yellow flag which put everyone back to their original grids. At that point everyone was ready for the get away and as the green flag was dropped Brad rolled out of a hole and pulled a wheel stand. This slowed him up considerably and he was passed by about 4 or 5 cars going into turn 2. Soon after he passed those cars back and got into 2nd place behind Lance Beale. Lance and Brad then spent the next 10 or so laps racing wheel to wheel without touching once which was really exciting to watch. With about 8 or so laps to go Brad finally managed to pass Lance.

The Feature went from green to chequer and Brad won his first Feature for the season. Those points put him at the top of the leader board, 3 points ahead of Michael Pickens. We still have 3 rounds to go for the NZ Team selection and looking at the top 6 now suggests that anything could happen.

So until next week for round 4 , I had better get back to the shed and get it ready.
